Downtown Santa Cruz is lovely and full of life and character.Each review score is between 1-10. Once out, you walk through a beautful (albeit rundown) park and across the river. Going around the hotel adds 5 minutes of walking and reduces the relaxing feel of this hotel. Two, exiting the hotel from the backside is quite difficult since the gates are all padlocked likely due to this reason. I mention this for two reasons: one, your walking path to downtown (about 10-12 minutes) goes across the San Lorenzo river and past a couple encampments. Unlike most major cities, I wasn't harassed and didn't feel unsafe, and instead was able to have normal conversations with several of them.
There is a notable homeless population near the hotel (on your way to lovely downtown Santa Cruz). The lamp shade looked like it experienced severe water damage and the shower needed some refreshing in the grout and other areas. Our vent was fairly broken and the filter hadn't been changed in some time. The rooms are clean and modern, but some of the smaller things impact the feel. The pool area provides a miniature oasis, yet the adult hours are not enforced leaving more relaxing time to be desired. The bartenders are kind and make high quality drinks. Once you enter, you're greeted with warmth, kindness, and some of the images that were advertised. The exterior is worn down and the area surrounding is aging. Hotel Paradox is an unassuming boutique hotel right off of a main and busy road.
